Biogeosciences

Introduction

The Biogeosciences group results from the convergence between PUCP professors interested in the study of natural ecosystems from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Indeed Biogeosciences is composed by specialists from PUCP and other universities dedicated to the study of ecological, biological, physical and geographical processes in the context of climate change, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

The research program is especially focused on Peruvian Andean Amazonian Ecosystems to allow a better understanding of their natural processes and to provide firm foundations for the management of the biodiversity and natural resources. The group works on Earth Sciences, one of the priority research topics of PUCP Vice-Rectorate of Research that includes water resources (exhaustion and pollution), climate change, renewable energies, biodiversity protection, disaster analysis and prevention.

Purpose:

  • Contribute to the knowledge of the dynamic and function of tropical forest ecosystems.
  • Contribute to the knowledge of diverse climate change impacts and the adaptation process in Peru.
  • Generate predictive models of climate change effects on the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems.
  • Build foundations for the conservation and management of biological resources.
  • Provide data for the adaptation of water resources management and high-mountain risk management.
  • Reinforce joint research with international institutions.
  • Create a platform for biogeophysical studies, which had not been addressed by PUCP, such as high-mountain geography, climate change, and tropical ecology, among others.
  • Incorporate students interested in natural and environmental sciences in the research projects of the group.

Objective:

  • Contribute to a better understanding of natural processes and build solid foundations for the management of biodiversity and natural resources.

  • Glaciology and hydrology in the Peruvian Andes.
