It presents the results of research carried out in the Extractive Industries, Surveillance and Sustainable Development Diploma. The legal regimes of nine Latin American States, which regulate the development of the extractive industry in their territories, have been analyzed. The analysis has been restricted to investigating only regulations on mining and hydrocarbons, due to the economic importance of such activities, as well as the environmental and social impacts they represent. Evaluated countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Venezuela and Costa Rica. They were selected according to the mineral and hydrocarbon reserves they harbor, their political regimes and the economic importance of exploiting these resources for their national economy.
