Global Youth Climate Week: PUCP will participate in this important event

English version:

Pontifical Catholic University of Peru announced today that it is joining with the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC) and around 100 other organizations worldwide to co-initiate the Global Youth Climate Week (the Week).

The Week, scheduled one week ahead of each UN Climate Change Conference (COP), aims to mobilize and convene the climate actions of the next generation for more concrete contributions to the progress of global climate governance.

“Youth are the backbone of a net-zero future,” says WANG Binbin, Executive Secretary-General of GAUC. “Many of them have already realized the importance and severity of climate change and have started to take actions. However, the world still lacks a mechanism for them to voice out together and stronger. By initiating the Week, we would like to work with our partners from around the world to provide that platform to the youth.”

Composed of 15 leading universities in 9 countries across 6 continents, GAUC aims to advance climate change solutions through research, education, and public outreach, and to partner with industry, non-profit and government organizations to promote rapid implementation on both local and global scales. Since its establishment in 2019, GAUC has made talent cultivation one of its main areas in addressing climate change. Last year, GAUC upgraded its annual Graduate Forum into the Global Youth Summit on Net-Zero Future 2021. Pooling the strength of its member universities and partners from around the world, the Summit presented 30 events during the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) and attracted over 1.25 million global participants.

During its past endeavors, GAUC realized that the geographical distance and loose coordination decrease the influence of youth’s climate actions. This January, GAUC proposed to the UNFCCC to initiate the Week as a mechanism for the youth to voice out together. Ms Patricia Espinosa, the then UNFCCC Executive Secretary wrote in her reply that it is “an impactful contribution to the UNFCCC process.” To maximize the effect of the Week and to engage broader audiences, GAUC has called out to its global partners to co-initiate the Week publicly, including but not limited to UN affiliate institutions, international organizations, social enterprises, and academic institutions.

Leading up to the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), the Week 2022 is scheduled to be launched on 31st October, lasting 5 days until 4th November. Co-initiators of the Week are going to organize diversified events during the Week to join the cause in preparing youth to take the lead for a net-zero future shared by all.

The Institute of Nature, Land and Energy (INTE) and the Academic Department of Social Responsibility (DARS) of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru will participate in The Week on Thursday, November 3 in the morning.

This activity will be divided in two parts, one about selected research thesis related to sustainable development presentations and the other about youth socio environmental projects. For this, we will conduct a call for research studies from undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students with a focus or impact on climate change.  In parallel, we will invite past and current initiatives led by students in the same scope for an in-person and online activity.
